ELA Nacimiento Ride - January 6, 2008
  • We have been invited to assist and support the annual Nacimientos Ride put on by Lupe Vela and the LACBC. It tours the East L.A. neighborhoods and stops to look at the Nacimiento displays at mostly individual homes in the 'hoods of Lincoln Heights, Boyle Heights, ELA, and Highland Park. It will start and end at the River Center which is close to the Oven and near the Home Depot.

    Lupe Vela tells us:

I would like to add the Bike Oven as one of the sponsors. Basically
this means being at the start of the ride and helping check tires.
This year we received approval to use the river center's bike stop
facility in the backside of the center( cypress park, avenue 26).
we will start there and end there. We don't need a pit stop- the
goal is to introduce your services to the group. you could set up at
the bike stop area to put air in tires and in addition, have one or
two people join the tour to assist with flats.

the bike tour registration starts at 10:30 so you can set up at 10
am ( bring materials, sell water....)
the bike ride starts at 11 am and ends around 2pm. If possible, it
would be nice to have one of you along on the ride to fix flats....

LACBC will have a table and a couple of volunteers for registration/
    liability forms and membership info
    Latino Urban forum- help lead
CICLE can help with publicty and give out materials.

    ============================ end of Lupe's message

    These are Harv's thoughts:

If it is still there, there is a bike workstand at the River Center. There used to be a pump, but last I saw it did not work. I don't think we need to set up a table, but there are outdoor picnic tables at the River Center. The ride is fairly short and slow, with a lot of stops at the Nacimiento displays at homes in the ELA 'hoods. I think the Rickshaw would go over just great. Before the event happens, I will check out the River Center to see if the items that I mentioned are still there.

If we had a floor pump, patches, tubes, and a few basic tools on the 'shaw, that should do it.
  • I'm in.... steve
  • Looks good. Start setting up voluteers to cover both the ride/event and the shop that day??
  • Like I said in the email (thanks for putting this on the forum, by the way), We've done events like this a few times in the past year.

If they've got a table for us, we can haul a stand, some tools, and spare parts on our bamboo trailer or on the rickshaw down to the River Center. That's a photo-op if you ask me.

I'd be glad to pitch in, and either cover the shop or help with bike repairs on the ride.

Harv's already into the idea of using the rickshaw to haul things to the start. What about connecting the trailer to the rickshaw!!

    Think about it!
  • Who's gonna "man-up" to pedal that pig? Hey, I'd love to do this ride, but I'm scheduled to work the shop that day... anyone wanna trade? I'll cover another day for ya...
  • Hey, I wanna do the ride too! Well, I intend to get to the shop ASAP after the ride, which luckily usually heads up this way anyway. I figure I will get there about 1:30 to 2:00. Worst case, we won't open up until then. Best case, someone will open at the usual time, 1:00pm. Although I have been opening closer to 12:30 on weekends.
  • hey let's just post up that the shop will be opened after the ride... so if ya breaks something on the ride, you can come get it fixed afterwards... that way we can pimp the ride too...
  • Does Lupe have some flyers to hand out or I guess we can print out from one of the sites that have the posting...........
