Anyone Want to Test 27" Tyres for the New York Times?
  • I got this in my inbox, an I thought I'd ask the Oven if anyone was interested:

    Hi,

I’m an Angleno and a reporter. I’m working on a gear test for The New York Times that focuses on 27” tires. Most suppliers are reporting a huge increase in sales, largely coming from people pulling old bikes from storage and co-ops like yours as well, and we’d like to test what’s on the market: a total of five tires in all. And we’re looking for a tester or a couple of testers. Any interest?

Now for the bad news: testers are not compensated. I wish it were otherwise, but that’s the paper’s policy, not mine. We would, however, include a line about the co-op in the story.

Again, the story is about 27” tires, so the tester would need to ride one of these rigs, as opposed to a 700c bike to test ‘em. And I’d love to have two or three testers if possible. Please drop me a line if anyone at the shop is interested. And, because this is the land of newspapers, I’m on deadline so please e-mail or call sooner rather than later.

    Best,

    Steve

  • It would be GREAT for us to get a mention in the NYT and if we were able to get a link from nyt.com to our site, it could be a huge boost to our search engine rankings. Plus, hey, free tires... Unfortunately, I don't have a bike with 27", but if anyone out there does, please let Josef know and we'll see if we can get in on this.
  • We have lots of bikes with 27" wheels. We have those wheels that we're building up from the donated parts. We can just slap those onto a bike, and test them out like that. Whop bikes, whatever. Although long term statistics could be difficult to get.
  • If you guys are interested in doing this, email Stephen at stephenkrcmar@yahoo.com or call him up at 323-669-7303

He might be full-up with testers, but it is worth a shot, eh?

BTW - "whop bike"? You tryin' to say sumpin' 'bout Italians?
  • Yeah, damn spaghetti riders everywhere, takin' all the good jobs and puttin' maninara on everything....
  • Here is the article: http://tinyurl.com/6687cv
Coupla Bike Kitchen people were the only testers.
Five tyres were evaluated, one of which I am running on one of my bikes at the moment. Evaluations seemed accurate, although far from comprehensive. Article was kinda short for such a subject. Main point being that better 27 inch tyres are out there for those of us who have dragged old ten speeds out of barns.
  • If anyone is interested.... here's the published article on the tires....
